Kerala’s adventure tourism sector received national recognition when Jackson Peter, the PADI-certified scuba diver who transformed Kovalam into an underwater adventure destination, was honored with the Adventure Tourism Leadership Award at the 17th Annual Convention of the Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI) in Srinagar on Tuesday, December 16, 2025.

The award, presented by Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, acknowledges Peter’s pioneering contributions to Kerala’s adventure tourism landscape and his role in establishing safety and environmental standards that have become models for the industry nationwide.

Unveiling Kovalam’s Underwater World

As Managing Director of the Bond Group of Companies and founder of Bond Safari Kovalam, Peter introduced visitors to the underwater world of Kovalam Beach, opening up an entirely new dimension of Kerala tourism. His vision transformed the famous beach destination from a purely coastal attraction into a comprehensive marine adventure hub, allowing tourists to experience the rich biodiversity beneath Kerala’s Arabian Sea waters.

“This award reflects the collective efforts of the Bond Group team, partners, and the broader adventure tourism community,” Peter said after receiving the honor. “Their continued dedication and professionalism have been instrumental in achieving this milestone.”

Champion of Coastal and Marine Conservation

Beyond commercial success, Peter has emerged as a vocal champion of environmental stewardship along Kerala’s coastline. Under his leadership, Bond Safari Kovalam has undertaken systematic beach and underwater cleanup initiatives, with his team regularly removing plastic waste from both the shoreline and seabed. These efforts have established a model for responsible tourism that other operators across Kerala and India have begun to emulate.

Peter’s commitment to marine conservation goes hand-in-hand with his business operations, demonstrating that adventure tourism and environmental protection are not mutually exclusive but rather complementary goals. His work has raised awareness about marine pollution among tourists and local communities alike, contributing to broader conservation efforts along Kerala’s coast.

Architect of Kerala’s Adventure Tourism Safety Framework

Peter played a crucial role as part of the Kerala Adventure Tourism and Safety Guidelines implementation team, working alongside distinguished professionals including Cdr. Sam T Samuel, Ravisankar K.V., Pradeep Murthy, Gopinath Parayil, SKJ Nair, and Manesh Bhaskar, the then CEO of Kerala Adventure Tourism Promotion Society (KATPS). This collaborative effort resulted in comprehensive safety protocols that have become the foundation for adventure tourism operations across Kerala.

The guidelines developed by this team have helped professionalize the adventure tourism sector in the state, ensuring that Kerala’s growth as an adventure destination is built on a solid framework of safety standards, training requirements, and operational best practices. These standards have not only protected tourists but have also enhanced Kerala’s reputation as a credible and responsible adventure tourism destination.

Setting National Benchmarks from Kerala

The Adventure Tour Operators Association of India recognized Peter specifically for his role in promoting safe, responsible, and sustainable water-based adventure tourism. His work through Bond Safari Kovalam has established benchmarks in safety standards, training protocols, and environmental stewardship that extend far beyond Kerala’s borders.

Under Peter’s leadership, Bond Safari has developed comprehensive skill development programs aimed at professionalizing the adventure tourism workforce. These initiatives have trained numerous individuals in water sports instruction, safety procedures, and marine conservation awareness, creating employment opportunities while elevating service standards.

Kerala’s Growing Adventure Tourism Profile

The recognition comes at a time when Kerala is increasingly being acknowledged for its role in India’s adventure tourism sector. While traditionally known for backwaters, Ayurveda, and cultural tourism, the state has successfully diversified its offerings to include water sports, trekking, wildlife safaris, and coastal adventure activities.

Peter’s work in Kovalam has been instrumental in this transformation. By demonstrating that Kerala’s beaches offer more than just scenic beauty -that they provide gateways to thrilling underwater experiences -he has helped attract a new demographic of adventure-seeking travelers to the state.

National Platform Recognizes Kerala Innovation

The 17th ATOAI Annual Convention in Srinagar brought together national and international adventure tourism stakeholders, policymakers, and industry leaders. Peter’s recognition at this national platform underscores how innovations and best practices developed in Kerala are influencing the broader Indian adventure tourism landscape.

India’s adventure tourism industry has witnessed significant growth in recent years, with travelers increasingly seeking experiential and adventure-based options. Leaders like Peter have ensured this growth is accompanied by appropriate safety measures and environmental responsibility -principles that are now being adopted nationwide.

The award highlights the importance the industry places on sustainable practices and professional standards. Peter’s dual focus on thrilling experiences and environmental conservation aligns perfectly with India’s efforts to promote responsible tourism that protects natural resources while providing economic opportunities.
